Legislation to move the budget address from late February to March 13 was introduced earlier this week.
Governors are supposed to get their budget to lawmakers by the fourth Tuesday in February by law. However, in years where a new Governor is seated the date is typically moved back to give the new Administration a little additional time to put together a budget. A final budget is due by June 30, when the fiscal year ends.
State Sen. Paul Sarlo, chairman of the budget committee, introduced the legislation, S-1248, which would move the Governor’s deadline to send a budget to the Legislature from Feb. 27 to March 13. The bill is expected to move through both houses.
