The State Board of Education saw an update on teacher preparation and professional licensure, as well as info on the new praxis test for early childhood. In addition the Board heard from Middlesex County Special Services district to enlarge their scope of services.
Status Report on Professional Licensure
Assistant Commissioner Pete Shulman provided the Board with an overview of changes to the current professional licensure code related to teacher preparation. The Department had had extensive discussions with stakeholders, including NJPSA, on several of the proposals which included changes to aspiring teacher’s clinical experiences, as well as changes to the amount of time a substitute may serve in a district, among other changes.

Middlesex Special Services District Seeks Board Approval for Expansion of Work
Further, the Board had a presentation from the Middlesex Special Service district on their quest to seek approval from the Board for work in areas outside of their original Board approval.
In addition, the Board recognized May 4-8 as Teacher Appreciation Week. As part of that the board heard from Mercer County’s Teacher of the Year.
Certification of School Districts
In addition, the Board approved 33 (17 full / 16 interim) reviews under NJQSAC. Appendix A lists all of the districts and their DPR scores. Seven districts scored 80 percent or above in all five DPR areas and were approved for a period of three years. Twenty-six districts scored below 80% in one or more DPR areas and were required to develop and implement a QSAC improvement plan to address deficient indicators.
Physical Education & Sport Month Recognized
The Board also recognized May as Physical Education and Sport month via a resolution. Members of the New Jersey Association of Physical Education, Health, Recreation and Dance (NJAPHERD) were on hand for the presentation.
Meeting Schedule for Next Year
Finally, the Board approved its meeting and public hearing schedule for the 2015-2016 school year. It also selected its nominating committee for establishing Board leadership for the coming year.
