On behalf of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, I applaud Governor Mikie Sherrill for her strong commitment to New Jersey’s public schools as a priority in her FY27 Budget Address. In a challenging fiscal year when difficult choices must be made, the Governor’s proposal to provide $12.4 billion in K-12 formula aid, the highest level in state history, recognizes the critical role that well-funded public schools play in supporting student outcomes and the future success of the State of New Jersey. Her proposed 3.1 percent increase in K–12 funding will help school districts continue to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of students across the state. As a member of the Sherrill-Caldwell Transition Team’s Education Action Team, I am excited to see how closely this budget reflects that process and the contributions of the field, aligning today’s needs with Governor Sherrill’s plans for tomorrow.
Specifically, we commend Governor Sherrill’s proposed investment in high impact tutoring programs to support educators and school leaders in their learning recovery work with students. We are also encouraged by the Governor’s proposal to include $1.4 billion in preschool programs. Expanding access to high-quality early childhood education is one of the most effective investments a state can make in the long-term success of its students. School leaders also agree with Governor Sherrill’s strong investment in student mental health through a proposal to fund partnerships between school districts and licensed mental health providers to provide counseling and intervention services to students during the school day.
In addition, we appreciate Governor Sherrill’s call to continue fully funding the state pension system through a $7.3 billion investment in FY 2027. Maintaining the commitment to stabilize the pension fund after years of underfunding is critical to honoring the promises made to New Jersey’s educators and ensuring long-term fiscal responsibility for the state. This investment in our educators sends a strong message of support to individuals considering a career in education
We look forward to working with the Governor and the Legislature during the budget process to ensure that New Jersey’s schools remain among the strongest in the nation.
