The New Jersey State Board of Education heard from Green School expert on benefits of environmental education and got an update on current sustainability efforts in New Jersey schools at the November 4 board meeting.
Learning About Sustainability
Hearing first from a national expert on Green Schools, the Board heard about the learning, health, and environmental benefits of investing in sustainable practices.
This was followed by a presentation by New Jersey School Board Association Executive Director Larry Feinsod on efforts to make New Jersey schools sustainable. Touting sustainability as a means to improve student and staff health and safety while lowering district costs, Feinsod talked about NJSBA training, PD and information-sharing efforts around sustainability.
According to Feinsod, NJSBA launched Sustainable Jersey for Schools in 2014. One year later 306 schools and 122 school districts are registered, with 59 schools have earned certification. Feinsod also spoke about efforts to train board members, NJSBA’s attempt to make their headquarters LEED certified, and annual Convention carbon neutral.
