Congress is once again holding budget talks and working on the final numbers for fiscal year 2018. This year, one of the main programs on the chopping block is Title II of ESSA. As you know, Title II plays a crucial role in supporting teachers, principals and other school leaders by providing funds that can be used for professional development purposes. We need your help to stem the tide.
NASSP and NAESP are working together to meet with key appropriators to discuss the importance of Title II. To aid us in securing funding for Title II, we are asking that folks to contact the staff of the appropriator. In our case that appropriator Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen. His staff member is Kathleen Hazlett. Ms. Hazlett’s email Kathleen.Hazlett@mail.house.gov.
In New Jersey this means:
- Developing a cadre of teacher leaders to serve as effective mentor teachers to support beginning teachers; and
- Building capacity of principals as instructional leaders and developers of teaching talent by leveraging a next-generation principal evaluation system
We’ve included a sample email here.
The Administration and the House of Representatives have both already discussed eliminating Title II funds for FY 18. Please help us protect these necessary funds by contacting these staffers and voicing your support for Title II.
